sustainable travel packing list & tips โœˆ๏ธ

living sustainably and low waste requires preparation. we've dedicated our lives to sustainability, and travel used to be an area of massive frustration for us. so, after years of travel, we have perfected the below packing list and tips so that you, too, can try to walk lightly as you explore.ย

getting to your destination โœˆ๏ธ

  • when possible, support airlines that offset their carbon emissions, or opt to do so yourself (jetblue offsets all flights!)

getting around your destination ๐ŸšŽ

  • travel via local public transit rather than taxis! this is a great way to be a part of the city/ culture youโ€™re visiting and reduce emissions.ย
  • walking or biking is also a great way to get to know where you are!ย

everyday necessities ๐Ÿด๐Ÿง‰

  • refillable water bottle
  • to-go cup (for coffee, smoothies, drinks, etc)
  • utensils
  • tote bag (for groceries, gifts, etc)
  • 1 stasher bag or lightweight food container (for leftovers or on the go snacks)
  • rechargeable batteries if needed

for airplane ๐Ÿ›ซ

  • compact blanket or tapestry (to avoid buying airplane blankets)
  • headphones compatible with planes
  • if possible, eat at the airport to avoid wasteful airplane meals

toiletries ๐Ÿง–โ€โ™€๏ธ

  • wear only reef-friendly sunscreens in any bodies of water (Surfrider's guide to reef-friendly sunscreensย is a great resource)
  • jars or upcycled plastic containers for shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc
  • toiletries that may leak can go in a stasher bag or an upcycled plastic bag

general rules of thumb ๐Ÿ“œ

  • this has nothing to do with sustainability, but please *try* to learn a little bit of the local language where you're headingย
  • when in a country where tap water is unreliable, bring a filter OR purchase the biggest bottles you can find (gallons or more)
  • ask for no straw, utensils, or bags when eating out (when you say, โ€œI try not to use plasticโ€ people generally understand)
  • try toย visit and support any local refill shops because they're popping up all over the world!ย

a lot of times, sustainable options are simply not available when on the road. don't beat yourself up - you're doing your best! ๐Ÿค—
